Tailrace Marina: Rebuilt Stronger After Hurricane Helene

May 29, 2025

On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene swept through the Southeast and brought an unprecedented surge of rainfall to the Catawba River. Much of this rain fell upstream, starting in Asheville, where the storm caused devastating damage. As the floodwaters made their way south, the series of man-made lakes created by Duke Energy simply couldn’t contain the massive inflow.

By late September 27, the rising waters had reached Tailrace Marina.

In an extraordinary community effort, we were able to secure additional cabling supports to most of our docks just in time. This last-minute action was absolutely critical in preventing even greater destruction. Still, once the waters receded, we had lost two full dock structures and sustained significant damage throughout the marina.

As heartbreaking as it was to see parts of the marina torn apart, what happened next was truly inspiring.

Over 130 volunteers from the community came out to help us clean up. In just one day, we were able to clear the entire shoreward side of the marina. Tailrace has always been more than a place to keep your boat—it’s been a beautiful public space and a gathering point for the community. Seeing it restored so quickly was a powerful reminder of that spirit.

In October, we began the long and difficult process of rebuilding. With the expertise of Rowboat Dock & Dredge, we didn’t just replace what was lost—we made the marina stronger, safer, and more resilient than ever before.

Here’s what’s new at Tailrace Marina:

  • Nearly doubled the number of dock pilings across the entire marina
  • Raised all dock pilings above Hurricane Helene’s high-water mark
  • Installed a permanent shoreline cabling system on all dock structures
  • Upgraded the marina-wide electrical system
  • Replaced and modernized plumbing infrastructure
  • Rebuilt all of our rentable boat lifts
  • Extended the access road to A Dock for easier entry
  • Upgraded the septic pump-out system

As we look back on the challenges of 2024, we do so with a heavy heart—but also with immense pride in what we’ve accomplished. Tailrace Marina has emerged from this storm stronger, more prepared, and ready to serve this community for generations to come.

We’re open, fully operational, and excited to welcome you back to the water.
